Jared Hamilton & Lindsay Hamilton - Co-Owners

Our History

1858

William Hamilton left Ireland as a result of the great potato famine, hoping to find a better life. Shortly after arriving in Canada, he found work in a copper mine in Quebec, and then lumber camps in the Ottawa Valley. With the money he made, he was able to help his family back home and eventually buy a farm in Quyon, Quebec.

1877

William Hamilton tied the knot with Ruth Emma Hobbs. They were short on cash, so they made a sod shanty instead of building a house.

1879

The Hamilton family, now with two sons, Robert Frederick Millard and William Noble, moved into a log house. The couple went on to have four more children: Mary Oderia Mabel May, Loretta Mildred, Wellington Sadler and Ruth Emma Pearle.

1896

William and Ruth Emma decided to build a new house. The kids were older and taking on more responsibilities on the farm. They were growing potatoes and raising pigs and horses. It was a lot of work, but they were determined to succeed.

1947

Jared and Lindsay's grandfather moved out of the farm, but still kept it as a weekend cottage and a home for their flock of sheep. It would be 30 years before it was reborn as Mountainview Turf.

1977

Jared and Lindsay's parents Bill and Susan started Mountainview Turf on land that had been in the family for four generations. Sod would soon be a new addition to their offerings.

1978

Bill married his high school sweetheart Susan, and in the same year, they started growing sod. As time went on, their turf farm took off, and they expanded their products to include seed and fertilizers as well.

1991

Mountainview Turf began doing turf maintenance for the National Capital Commission, including Canada Day trash removal on Parliament Hill. Fast forward to today, and their turf maintenance clients include athletic fields, campuses, sports fields and golf courses.

2002

After graduating from the Horticulture program at the University of Guelph, Bill and Susan’s son Jared joined the family business. His fresh ideas and visionary thinking would help expand the business even further.

2005

Mountainview acquires its first automatic sod harvester.

2009

Jared’s sister, Lindsay, joins the company after finishing her Turfgrass degree at the University of Guelph. She would prove to be an enormous team asset, impacting everything from HR and marketing to community involvement.

2020

A 12-year succession plan comes to an end as Jared and Lindsay assume full ownership of Mountainview Turf. Their production area sits at 430 acres.

2022

Acting on an ambitious strategic growth plan, production has increased to 725 acres.
